The School Dean's Welcome

The School of Public Administration (SPA), Renmin University of China, was established in June, 2001. It offers Ph.D. degrees and MA degrees in 10 areas of concentration respectively. In addition, it offers a separate in-service-student MPA degree and serves as a nationally designated host unit for post-doctoral studies and research in the fields of public administration and applied economics.

SPA consists of 3 departments, 7 institutes, and 10 research centers. The departments and research institutes are: Department of National Economic Management (Macro-Economics), Department of Public Administration, Department of Land and Real Estate Management, Institute of Education, Institute of Regional Economics and Urban Management, Institute of National Defense and Security, Institute of Social Security, Institute of Organization and Human Resources, Institute of Finance and Taxation Management and Institute of Quantitative Analysis in Public Administration.

The school now boasts of 91 full-time faculty members.  Among them, 31 are professors and 35 are associate professors. 80.2 % of the faculty members possess doctor degrees. We also have a group of 29 administrative staff in the school. Up to the end of 2004, the school has 1899 registered students, among them, 457 are undergraduate students, 418 regular full time graduate students, 811 MPA students, 202 Ph. D candidates and 11 post-doctoral research fellows.

As one of the schools that took the lead in providing MPA education in China, our school has made great progress in establishing specialized areas of concentration in the MPA program. The establishment of lead-professor system for each of our MPA courses and each of our MPA areas of concentration has played a pivotal role in our MPA education.  The 17 areas of concentration in our MPA program boast the largest in numbers compared with all the pilot MPA programs in universities throughout the country.  It offers the broadest choices in areas of concentration for our MPA students. Our school has won the first place in MPA enrollment nationwide in the past three years consecutively, and has become one of the principal MPA training bases in China.

SPA has established extensive relationships with lots of famous universities around the world.  As regular intervals, our professors are invited to deliver lectures abroad. Faculties from our school and our international partner schools do research together, sponsor international academic conferences jointly, and work to establish mechanisms of fostering postgraduate students cooperatively.

At its founding, the school has embraced in its mission the following key values: visionary, pragmatic, innovative, and dedicated. These values are not only the guiding principles for our faculty and staff, but will also be taught to our students.
